TANTALUS RANGE
Rising over 8000 feet out of the Squamish River valley, the
Tantalus range tantalizes those that view it from the surrounding
areas. Jagged alpine rock summits are flanked by dramatic
glaciers and icefalls that appear to defy gravity. This is
perhaps one of the most beautiful ranges on the Coast, and
its within a 1 hour drive from Vancouver!
After several years of visiting this area, I have concluded
that hiking into the area, although cavalier, is best left
for those with ample time and great reserves of energy. The
Tantalus range's close proximity to the Squamish airport allows
us to fly to a helicopter access basecamp right in the heart
of the range. Including the 10 minute flight, it takes about
2 hours from downtown Vancouver to our 6600 foot basecamp.
Although several custom variations of itineraries are possible,
a 3 or 4 day adventure seems to suit most people. With such
a quick approach, this still allows 3 or 4 days of climbing.

DIFFICULTY AND ABILITY LEVELS
Once you are in the Tantalus Range, you quickly realize it
actually is as rugged as it looks from the the distance. In
saying that, it is still quite possible to be a basic level
mountaineer and enjoy yourself thoroughly. It is preferable
that you be reasonably comfortable walking with crampons and
ice axe, and it is best that you have a basic rock climbing
ability.
