BATTLE ABBEY LODGE SKI TRIP
Nestled in the heart of the Selkirks, on a shoulder of Foremast Peak at the head of Butters Creek is the infamous Battle Abbey hut. Originally built by Bill Putnam and Hans Gmoser as a private ski lodge for friends and family over 20 years ago, it has gradually become opened up to all who enjoy the magical Selkirks ski hut experience. Due to its hallowed reputation though, it has always been quite difficult to get bookings at the hut. Luckily I have been able to organize 2 separate week long trips to this amazing lodge.
The terrain in this area is quite varied. A good mix of glaciers, alpine bowls, and trees allows for a variety of skiing options depending on the weather and conditions. There are good practice slopes (intermediate runs) close to the hut, yet there are also plenty of big alpine lines to ski when the snow stability allows. As far as vertical footage….a shorter day may only be 1500 – 2000 feet, however the big days may be well over 5000 feet. It all depends on conditions and group energy levels. Having 2 guides allows for flexibility with differing ability levels.
The weather here is pretty average Selkirks mountain weather – you name it, we get it. It’s been my experience that this area receives some of the most consistently good snow in Southern BC, however that does not preclude us from getting abnormal weather events. Ideally we will have a mix of faceshot to boot top powder, spring corn snow, and champagne powder. But we should also be prepared for areas of windcrust, raincrust, or wet and heavy snow, if we are unlucky with the weather.
The hut has a large wood stove for heat, foam mattresses with duvets, pillows, and all linen will be provided. (no need to bring sleeping bags). After the renovations of 2005, there are now 5 bedrooms upstairs. There is no sauna, however there is a shower with hot running water which accommodates between 5-10 people for day depending on how long the showers are (wood heated water heater)
There are indoor toilets, and an outside outhouse (The Green Room). A living room with music and games for relaxing, and a deck with a great view. Quite a comfortable situation really.

COST OF THE BATTLE ABBEY 2010:
$2,000 Cdn + GST tax
this price includes helicopter flights to/from Golden, all meals and accommodation while at the hut, and guiding by certified ACMG / IFMGA guides.
DIFFICULTY AND ABILITY LEVELS:
The Battle Abbey is located in big mountains. That being said a strong intermediate skier should easily manage most terrain encountered. Ropes will be employed by the guides if there is any seriously exposed positions.
It does happen that some people get tired early or have 'low energy' days. Having 2 guides allows flexibility so that people can have a shorter day. Also it is possible we may split groups if there are varying objectives..
